Last years format will continue in 2023 which will consist of two tiers of competition for nomination. The Champion Schools Trophy Competition will remain along with the Shield finals. Regional Pennants competitions will also continue in 2023.
Teams looking for a less competitive environment may wish to opt for the Regional Pennants competition which only run in Term 2. Locally nominated groups will compete in four Perth metropolitan regions (North West, North East, South West, South East) with a round robin group stage. If there are more than 2 groups per region then a play-off final will occur. The winner of the group or the final will be declared Regional Champion. A Regional Pennant Champion may then opt to join the knock out rounds of the Shield Competition.
Champion Schools will operate in group stages with the top boys teams and top girls teams moving into the Champion Schools knockout rounds in Term 3. The remaining teams from the group stages will then move into the Shield knockout rounds in Term 3. There will be set dates for Semi Final and Grand Finals for both of these competitions at the end of Term 3. Please note Specialist Schools ‘A’ teams will be included in group stages and no longer separated into a “top tier” group.
In summary:
Champions Schools and Shield Trophy: Teams have been placed in groups of 4, 5 or 6 geographically wherever possible. On occasion a group of 3 or 7 maybe necessary.
The top performing schools based on group position, points per game average and goal difference, will move in the Champion Schools knockout competition. The remaining teams will move in the Shield Trophy knockout competition.
Regional Pennants: Teams placed into regional groups of 3, 4, 5, 6 or seven based on regional locations. Teams will play in a round-robin competition to determine the group winner. If there are two groups in one region, then a play-off final will determine the champion with the home team selected on results from the group stages Regional Pennants winners may opt to join the Shield knock out stage.
